What to Do When You Don’t Know

If you follow me on social media or have read any of my previous blog posts or have listened to any of my podcasts you know that I am a vulnerable person. I don’t shy aware from authenticity and transparency in order to show my real yet flawed self in order to shine the spotlight on my flawless God. In this post I plan to help those in their “I don’t know” season or moments. An “I don’t know” season/moment is when you have been in expectation and you have yet to see the manifestation of what you have been working and praying for or you thought you know what God was going to do next but there was a plot twist. I don’t know moments/seasons can be especially difficult for the type-A individuals who love plan Bs, organization, structure, order, knowing, and can lack patience.

God is so faithful because He loves it when we don’t know what’s coming next or how things will happen. He loves it because that is when we can cast our cares and really utilize our faith. God has been working on my patience this season. I am type B in the fact of me being goofy, free-spirited, fun, and down to earth but I can be type A in liking to know, having goals, being ambitious and planning. God recently placed an amazing woman of God in my life who he would use to help me further develop spiritually. Our first meet up we discussed everything from family, ministry, our callings, purpose, and fasting. She encouraged me to do a 7 day fast of water and juice in order to press into God. She expressed her excitement and passion for spiritual growth. Me, being the radical woman I am accepted the challenge as I God had already been speaking to me about going deeper and leaving my usual comfort zone.

Through that fast God show me so much of myself! How much of my pursuits were due to me wanting to figure out the “I don’t knows” instead of trusting the “God that knows”. He showed me how much of my busy-ness was rooted in a fear of failure and selfish ambition. He did a heart check that brought me to my knees and in repentance and worship! I began to realize that it’s okay to not know, not have it all figured out, and the daily need of relying on God. The hunger during the fast triggered me to hunger for the things of God: His presence, His thoughts, His heart and His will. It helped me to recognize the need of regular, prioritized spiritual discipline so He can increase and for me to decrease. It allowed me to recognize that stepping in purpose does not mean you will always like or understand God’s method of doing things and when you don’t know to simply surrender.

Through the fast, God ignited the flame in my devotion life, helped me with prioritizing the things of God daily, and I began to have a heart of thankfulness including being thankful for my failures. I began to thank him for the relationships that didn’t work out, the investments and endeavors that didn’t yield returns, and the disappointment that came with them. I was able to thank him because I realized that God allowed me to go through the hardships and disappointments so that I can finally learn to trust Him. Trust Him for real for real.

The kind of trust that says “Lord I would like this …but not my will but your will be done”. The kind of trust that is believing God for stuff that would make no sense to the average person given your current circumstances. The kind of trust, obedience, and attitude that makes God proud and allows us to walk into the promise land. That is the advice I give you for what to do when you don’t know.

I encourage you to:

(1) press into God (2) Fast and Pray (3) Spend time in His Word (4)Communicate with Christian friends/family (5)Connect to your local church (6)Put Him first daily. His word says that without Him we can do nothing. When we trust in Him we can experience His peace because it is then when we give our “I don’t knows” to a God that is all-knowing and all powerful!
